Good sightings are coming in twos this fall. This time the species is Anthanassa texana, the Texas Crescent. On October 28 Jim Reiser sighted one on this property in Sarpy County while doing yardwork. It was his first encounter with this butterfly in Nebraska in his many years of observing Lepidoptera. So an occasion to remember and a county record.
The next day Lori Tomes photographed a Texas Crescent in neighboring Saunders County (also a county record) which she was kind enough to share.
Most years this southern species is not reported in Nebraska but over the years has been found wherever there are observers. So probably more widespread than records indicate. If you have late season flowers be alert for unusual visitors.
Thanks to Lori and Jim!
