Earlier this summer (June 11) Steve Spomer set up some lights in Nemaha County at Indian Cave State Park. Among the insects attracted to his lights was a Hermit Sphinx. The five Nebraska records for this eastern sphinx are the westernmost in North America. Larvae feed on mints and beebalms. A great find of an uncommon/rare moth.
Then on July 26 Colin Croft photographed a Summer Azure in the Wildcat Hills in Scotts Bluff County. While this butterfly is common in eastern portions of the state it is much harder to come by in the high plains. Hence the paucity of records from western Nebraska. Good find Colin!!
