Sleepy Duskywing

Status: Uncommon local resident, probably somewhat overlooked due to its early flight.
NENHP Ranking: S2, Tier 2
Range: The Sleepy Duskywing is found in the eastern half of the United States as well as Texas, New Mexico and portions of Arizona and California. In Nebraska it is known to occur in the southeastern corner of the state.
Larval Hostplant(s): Oaks – Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) in Nebraska.
Broods/Flight Times: One spring flight. There are Nebraska records from April 27 -May 19.
Overwintering: As a full grown caterpillar.
Habitat: This species inhabits margins and openings in oak woodlands.
Avg. Wingspan: 1 1/4 – 1 3/4 inches
Found at: Indian Cave State Park, Fontenelle Forest, Twin Oaks SWMA (Johnson County) and Camp Luther (Colfax County)
Similar Species: The Sleepy Duskywing is smaller than the other oak feeding Duskywings.
Notes: It has been collected with Erynnis juvenalis and/or E. horatius on several occasions.
