Hops Azure (Celastrina humulus) found in NE

Dr. Matthew Brust of Chadron State College recently observed and photographed an Azure laying eggs on Hops (Humulus sp.) in a canyon south of Chadron. These photos proved to be the link that documented the presence of the Hops Azure (Celastrina humulus) in Nebraska. Additional research is needed to determine how widespread it is inContinue reading “Hops Azure (Celastrina humulus) found in NE”

New County Record – Lupine Blue found in Phelps County

Several weeks ago I took a short walk around Jones Federal Waterfowl Production Area (just southwest of Holdrege) and thought it might be good Regal Fritillary habitat. Then Friday June 4 Jen and I met Pat and Diane Miller at the Scotia Chalk MineContinue reading “Four More County Records for NE”

DrivingContinue reading “New record for Saline County: Peck’s Skipper – Polites peckius”

I’ll briefly summarize what I reported this year. 2020 turned out to be a pretty good year diversity wise.  Roughly a dozen observers recorded 113Continue reading “2020 – A look back (Season Summary)”

102 species – Season Recap

So I guess with snow and temps in the teens that butterfly season is officially over. Despite late season trips to the North Loup, Niobrara and Republican Rivers I’ve been stuck on 102 species since just before Labor Day. So 102 species it is. That exceeds what I expected thanks in large part to myContinue reading “102 species – Season Recap”
